the cat will yield you the comfy chair
raise his head for your benediction
I’ll pour hot bubbling water over mint
pull back the curtains   slide open the door
let in the cool garden air to refresh you
you can be yourself
goddess   saint   or some unexpectedly
ordinary woman   with tired hands
with chipped and missing teeth
we can muse together over the demands
of tending a hearth in modern times
you can have my bed
I’ll sleep on the camping mat
there’s so much I’d love to learn from you
how it all unfolded   how it looks to you now
or we could just be quiet
enjoying the night
and the sound of distant cars
on the rain-wet road
